The Vanhankoski grove area is a part of the national grove protection programme approved in 1989. The area got its name from the rapids in the old channel of the River Loimijoki, which was left dry when a landslide in 1799 blocked the mouth of the channel and the river changed its direction to the current channel.
The grove area is colourful and diverse. There are floodplain beaches, meadows, moraine mounds, and the old riverbed is still visible. The grove area is located next to the River Loimijoki. The nature of the grove area is diverse, and it provides an opportunity to experience unique Finnish habitat.
Under the arm of the Vanhankoski grove area is the yard and garden of the old Saari Farm, which is maintained by sponsor associations. An eight-person sleeping shelter, a campfire site and an accessible outhouse were built in the area in 2021. All that remains of the farm’s buildings is the old lakeside sauna, which is not currently in use.
Author Jukka Saarinen has written his own fairy tale for the Vanhankoski grove area, which starts right at the corner of the parking lot and goes around the entire route. The fairytale adventure proceeds with the help of “book pages”, i.e. there are boards along the path where the story grows.
