St Catherine’s Church is a beautiful stone church located right in the centre of Huittinen. It is one of the medieval churches in Finland. The church is located on a hill called Karsatinmäki. The name is older than the church, indicating that the site was once a karsikko, a pagan sacrificial site.
Two slightly different theories have been put forward about the age of the old part. The older theory is that the church was built low in the 1340s and raised to its present height in the 1490s.
A later study, however, suggests that the church was built to its present height at one time, around 1495. In any case, the old part was given its present appearance in the 1490s. There is no evidence of a possible earlier wooden church on the site.
As the population grew, the church had to be enlarged in the late 1700s. The last major change took place in 1958-1959. The church is a great excursion destination for visitors interested in architecture and history.
