Punkalaidun enchants with its idyllic countryside

In Punkalaidun, you can experience idyllic countryside ambience and nostalgia at their best. Located at the halfway point of the Taikayöntie route, Punkalaidun is surrounded by rolling grain fields and a beautiful river valley. Must-see sights include the Yli-Kirra Museum, which inspired the Finnish children’s author Mauri Kunnas to create the Doghill (Koiramäki) of his beloved books. For this reason, the idyllic courtyard of the Yli-Kirra Museum is also known as Doghill House (the Koiramäki house).

The Mäenpää Labour Hall along Taikayöntie is a sight to behold. Among other activities, the house hosts movie screenings using an old projector, and the entire house is imbued with working-class history. The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas in Tampere conducted a study on Finnish labour halls to support proposing some of them to be designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The study highlighted Paasitorni in Helsinki and the Mäenpää Labour Hall in Punkalaidun as possible candidates.

Punkalaidun is also home to Särkkä, the most beautiful dance pavilion in all of Finland. If you’re feeling like a cup of coffee, stop over at the sympathetic café Myötätuuli, which is very popular especially among motorcyclists. It is one of the rare cafés in Finland that still offer table service. Punkalaidun also features many lovely nature destinations, such as the Porttikallio viewing tower, with expansive views of the town, stretching as far as the eye can see.

Let the idyllic Punkalaidun charm you!
